chingusai_logo.png How Enggusai has been growing

When we held the first Enggusai session in June, I was not entirely sure what to expect. It was a pilot to see whether English-speaking LGBTQ+ people living in Korea wanted a space to make friends and find their own community. We made the decision to centre the programme around honest conversations with no alcohol or dating agenda, and we also chose not to have a group chat, so that participants would be encouraged to connect with each other on their own.

We held our first session at Chingusai's office, and I nervously hosted it with the Chingusai team cheering me on. 20 people came into the room and the conversations kept going. By the end of the night, 10 of them had gone out for a self-organised samgyeopsal dinner together, and I think it was at that moment that I understood we might have found something people really needed.

Since then, Enggusai has grown to more than 120 members, with a waitlist of over 180 people, and our sessions have grown from 20 people to between 50 and 70. Our members come from many different parts of the world, and I did not expect how many Korean members would join too.

What I am most proud of, though, is not the numbers. At every session we ask people in a survey whether they felt welcomed and safe, and the answer stayed between 4.8 and 4.9 out of 5 all the way through. That feeling of safety was the thing I was most afraid of losing as we grew, but our members have protected it together.

Something else I did not expect is how much of the community now happens without us. Members have started their own group chats, go for dinners after sessions, and organise small hangouts during the week. Just last weekend, I heard that one of our members organised a picnic at Hangang with more than 30 people.

As our programme is centred around conversations about our queer experiences of living in Korea, each session has also been a chance to learn. We started with conversations about life in Seoul, then friendship, belonging and home, and most recently queer wisdom, the things we carry and what we pass on. Listening to the stories people shared, I realised that even though we come from different parts of the world and may look different on the outside, we can connect through the hardships and joys we share as queer people.

October marks the end of the pilot, and I am happy to share that Enggusai will continue with Chingusai's support. The next step is making it less dependent on one person, so we are building a core team and a volunteer group, and preparing to start small hobby groups led by members themselves, so that Enggusai can become something the community truly runs together.

To be honest, none of this would have been possible without Chingusai, who believed in this idea when it was only a conversation. Even though I am not Korean, Chingusai believed that creating a world that is safe for everyone has to include everyone. Thank you for your support, and for giving us the ground to grow together.
