광장은 계속됩니다 

— 베를린 프라이드 공격 희생자를 추모하며

 

7월 25일 저녁, 베를린 크리스토퍼 스트리트 데이(CSD)의 마지막 축제가 열리던 티어가르텐에서 차량이 인파를 향해 돌진했습니다. 한 사람이 목숨을 잃었고 스물아홉 명이 다쳤습니다. 수십만 명이 모여 서로의 존재를 축하하던 하루가 그렇게 끝났습니다. 친구사이는 떠난 이를 추모하며, 유가족과 부상자, 그날 그 자리에 있었던 모든 이들에게 깊은 애도와 연대의 마음을 전합니다.

 

우연한 장소에서 벌어진 참사가 아닙니다. 성소수자들이 일 년 중 가장 자유롭고 가장 눈에 띄는 바로 그 순간을 겨냥한 공격입니다. 프라이드는 처음부터 폭력에 대한 응답이었고, 광장에 나와 서로를 확인하는 일 자체가 싸움이었습니다. 매년 한국의 퀴어문화축제들은 거리와 광장을 사용하기 위해 싸우고 있고, 혐오세력이 둘러싼 현장에서 노래해온 우리는 그 광장의 절실함을 너무나 잘 알고 있습니다. 

 

베를린의 슬픔은 남의 일이 아닙니다.

 

혐오범죄를 강하게 규탄합니다. 동시에 우리는 분명히 말합니다. 이 참사가 또 다른 혐오의 구실이 되어서는 안 됩니다. 성소수자를 향한 폭력을 이주민 전체에 대한 낙인으로 되갚으려는 정치는 희생자를 추모하는 것이 아니라 이용하는 것입니다. 성소수자의 안전은 누구도 배제의 표적이 되지 않는 광장에서 옵니다.

 

추모는 광장을 비우는 일이 아니라 다시 채우는 일입니다. 내년에도 베를린과 한국의 거리와 광장들에는 무지개가 걸릴 것입니다. 베를린의 친구들에게, 깊은 애도와 연대의 뜻을 남깁니다. 끝으로 곧 있을 네덜란드의 월드 프라이드가 안전하게 개최되길 바라는 마음 역시 덧붙입니다.

Pride Stands Strong Against Violence

: In Memory of the Victims of the Berlin Pride Attack

 

On the evening of July 25, a vehicle drove into the crowd gathered in Tiergarten for the closing celebrations of Berlin's Christopher Street Day (CSD). One person was killed and twenty-nine more were injured. It was a day when hundreds of thousands had gathered simply to see one another and be seen, and that is how it ended. Chingusai mourns the person we lost, and offers our deepest condolences and solidarity to the bereaved family, to everyone who was injured, and to everyone who was there when it happened.

 

This was not a random tragedy. It struck at the moment when we are at our freest and most visible. Pride has been a response to violence from the very start. Simply standing in the streets and squares to recognize one another has always been an act of resistance. Every year, Korea's Queer Culture Festivals have to fight just to use public streets and squares. As people who have sung our pride while surrounded by anti-LGBTQ+ protesters, we know exactly how precious it is to have a place of our own in those streets and squares.

 

What happened in Berlin happened to all of us.

 

We condemn this hate crime in the strongest terms. At the same time, we say this clearly: this tragedy must not become an excuse for more hatred. We reject any politics that answers violence against LGBTQ+ people by scapegoating migrants as a whole. This does not honor the victims. It exploits them. LGBTQ+ safety depends on a space where no one is excluded.

 

We mourn by filling the square, not emptying it. Rainbow flags will rise over the streets and squares of Germany and Korea again next year.To our friends in Berlin, we offer our deep condolences and solidarity. Finally, we hope that WorldPride in the Netherlands continues safely through to its close.
