멀린 합참의장, 파월 전 국무 "동성애 정책 재고 필요"
(워싱턴 AP.로이터=연합뉴스) 미국 국방부의 동성애자 군복무 금지 정책인 '묻지도, 말하지도 말라(Don't Ask, Don't Tell)'를 재고해야 한다는 전.현직 미군 지도부의 발언이 잇따르고 있다.
'묻지도, 말하지도 말라' 규정은 빌 클린턴 행정부 시절인 1993년 제정된 것으로, 이 규정에 따르면 미군 당국은 신병 채용시 지원자의 성적 지향에 대해 물어서는 안 되며 미군에 입대한 자는 공개적으로 자신이 동성애자임을 선언해서는 안된다.
지난 16년간 이 규정을 어겨 전역한 미군은 총 1만2천500명에 이르며, 현재 미군에 복무하는 동성애자는 약 6만5천명에 달하는 것으로 알려져 있다.
또, 미 대법원은 지난 6월 초 전직 미군 장교 출신인 제임스 피에트란겔로 2세가 제기한 군내 동성애 공개 허용 요구 소송을 각하하면서, 국방부의 군내 동성애 금지 규정에 대해 합헌 판결을 내렸다.
이와 관련, 지난달 30일에는 한국계 미군 장교인 뉴욕주 방위군 소속의 대니얼 최(28) 중위가 커밍아웃의 대가로 전역 판정을 받기도 했다.
최 중위는 미 육군사관학교인 '웨스트포인트' 출신 동성애자 장교들의 모임 '나이츠 아웃(Nights Out)' 소속으로, 그간 미군의 동성애 정책을 공개적으로 비판해 왔다.
