제3회 히어로 어워즈(Hero Awards) ‘Community Ally’ 부문 Hero 선정
2019년 11월 22일 저녁 6시 30분, 태국 방콕의 네덜란드 대사관 관저에서 제3회 히어로 어워즈(Hero Awards)가 개최되었습니다. HIV/AIDS 이슈를 중심으로 아시아 지역의 MSM(Men who have Sex with Men)과 트랜스젠더의 건강과 인권을 증진하기 위해 2007년 설립된 APCOM(Asia Pacific COalition for Men's sexual health)은, 창립 10주년이 되던 2017년에 히어로 어워즈를 제정하여 그해 1회 시상식을 개최하였으며, 이 시상식은 APCOM의 기금 모금을 위한 갈라쇼를 겸하고 있습니다.
HIV/AIDS 인권활동과 성소수자 인권보장을 위해 힘쓴 아시아·태평양 지역 활동가들을 위한 이 시상식은 총 9개 부문의 수상으로 진행되는데, 올해에 열린 히어로 어워즈 2019의 ‘Community Ally’ 부문에서 한국게이인권운동단체 친구사이의 이종걸 사무국장이 선정되었습니다.
시상식에 참석한 이종걸 사무국장은 수상소감을 통해 “이 수상은 개인의 상이 아니라, 한국의 성소수자 인권 증진을 위해 밤늦게까지 일하고 있는 수많은 활동가들과 한국의 LGBTI 커뮤니티 일원들의 노력 때문”임을 밝혔습니다. 더불어 그가 애창하는 곡이자 시상식의 이름을 닮은 Mariah Carey의 ‘Hero’를 불러 수상의 기쁨을 관객들과 함께 나누기도 하였습니다. 이날 영어로 발표된 수상 소감의 전문은 아래와 같습니다. 수상을 진심으로 축하드리며, 친구사이는 앞으로도 HIV 감염인과 성소수자 커뮤니티의 인권 향상에 힘쓸 것을 약속드립니다.

I love you, I love you and thank you so much and I appreciate you.
First of all,
I would like to thank my family for making me act as a human rights activist and a fabulous gay. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the members of Korean Gay Men’s Human Rights Group ‘Chingusai’ their support, trust and love. And I would like to share the joy of winning awards with fellow Korean activists who are still working hard for better change, rainbow action, and Solidarity of anti-discrimination law. Right. This award is yours. And I would like to share the pleasure of winning the awards with multi-thousands of LGBTI people in Korea, with North Korea.
Today this award means a lot to me. It is a request from our community people and a promise to me to make a change in the future. We have so much work to do and lots of work to do with our whole heart. As the winner of this Hero Awards, I want to join you in this journey. Thank you.
